Bill Maher has been one of my favorite comedians for years as his political satire is right up there with the Jon Stewart’s and Stephen Colbert’s of the world. The fact that he’s on HBO is a testament to how censored some of his remarks need to be, like, for example, his recent tweet about Broncos sensational quarterback Tim Tebow.
During a game over Christmas weekend where the Broncos were being hammered by the Buffalo Bills, Maher tweeted, “Wow, Jesus just fucked #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere … Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler ‘Hey, Buffalo’s killing them.'”
Personally, that tweet had me laughing my ass off. But when talking about the son of God – I’m referring to Tebow of course – it’s best to proceed with caution. Tebow has been amazing in nearly every game he’s played this year, posting a record of 7-2 as a starter and leading miraculous 4th quarter comebacks nearly every Sunday. He is well known for being endeared by millions of passionate Christian followers.
Maher’s tweet garnered an angry response from Eric Bolling of Fox News (shocker there), who called the comedian, “disgusting vile trash.” Bolling later tweeted, “I can’t even repeat what he (Maher) just tweeted about Tebow … on Christmas Eve. #straighttohellBill.” On top of that response there were calls by some on Twitter for everyone to cancel their HBO subscriptions.
I’d say it’s all a huge overreaction. Comedy is about knowing where the line is and deliberately crossing it, right?
